My Favourite Places To Eat In 2017

Happy 2018 everyone!

I was hoping to start blogging more regularly, but as ever life has got in the way. We unfortunately lost my gran on 2nd Jan. She was the most amazing lady and lived until she was 92. I am so grateful to have had so much time with her and she influenced me in more ways than I can say.

In this post I’m having a little look back at 2017 in the form of my favourite meals of the year. So here we go – my top 5.

At number 5: The Harbour Inn, Southwold
My partner and I love the Harbour and its sister pub, The Bell in Walberswick. It serves up classic pub grub in a relaxed setting. We always get a warm welcome at both pubs and love walking on the beach before or after a meal. I used to always go for the sweet potato fritters but they’ve stopped making them so I either opt for the Suffolk Smokies (haddock in cheesey deliciousness) or a classic cod and chips with mushy peas, yum yum! I definitely recommend both of these pubs if you’re out and about in the Southwold/Walberswick area. Just don’t be surprised if they are very busy!

Number 4: La Tour Cycle Café, Ipswich
Since visiting La Tour Cycle Café back in the summer, they have moved premises. They can now be found at Unit 7 on the Waterfront in Ipswich – I’ll have to visit soon! When I went I had a lovely, hearty lunch. I had a ham and cheese panini, I think it was with a German or Dutch cheese, I remember it being a notch above your average sandwich and the salad had a fantastic dressing. The Café also has some really great projects going on to help the community, go check out its Facebook page to find out more.

Number 3: Regatta, Aldeburgh
If you’re a long time reader of my blog you’ll know how much I love the Regatta. It had to be in my top 5 list! We go here two or three times a year to celebrate family occasions and we always have a lovely meal with great service. I think this time I had a seabass on ratatouille. Thinking about it now is making my mouth water! I’m sure we’ll be back here very soon for another family meal. If you love seafood I definitely recommend this local restaurant.

Number 2: Hintlesham Hall, nr. Ipswich
I was very lucky to stay at Hintlesham Hall for work earlier this year. The hotel itself is luxurious and the food was just as good. Scallops, veggie risotto, choccy brownie. Yes, yes and yes. The food and service was top quality and we are actually going back for a family wedding in March which I’m really excited about. For those looking to impress a date (Valentine’s is just around the corner people) or wanting to treat someone special, then Hintlesham Hall is a great option.

Number 1: Bourgee, Bury St Edmunds
And the number one place on my list for 2017 is Bourgee in Bury St Edmunds. Bourgee is a relatively new restaurant to the town, it arrived earlier this summer, and I have to say it was definitely my favourite place to dine. The décor and service is on point, and the mix of surf and turf dining ticked the boxes for my partner and I.
I had the tempura soft shell crab for starters which was stunning to look at as well as tasty. I then went for the lobster and langoustine burger for my main course which was unlike anything I’d had before. But the absolute highlight of the meal had to be the lobster. I’d never had lobster before and OMG I didn’t know what I was missing. My partner and I shared half a whole grilled lobster with garlic butter – the lobster literally melted in the mouth, so tender and moreish. Next time we go we both agreed we’d order a whole one – wow oh wow.

So that’s my low down on the best places to eat in Suffolk – hopefully I’ll get to blog more in 2018, keep your fingers crossed folks! XO
